While definitely a part of the long history of encyclopedias in general, the one of Diderot and d’Alembert, which comprises seventeen volumes and eleven volumes of plates all published between 1751 and 1777, occupies a special place. Their publication imposes the name “encyclopedia” to designate a reference work presenting in systematic fashion universal or specialized knowledge; and it is their work that is referred to with the proper noun L’Encyclopédie. An examination of the methodological and philosophical choices proclaimed by Diderot and d’Alembert—even when these choices correspond only imperfectly to the actual practice of the many contributors to the work—may still help us think about the encyclopedic project.
